Now in its ninth year, the annual Run Jimmy Run Charity 5K has raised close to $100,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter. The family-friendly 5K race and 1K fun walk was launched by Maureen Griffin Tomczak in memory of her father, Buffalo Mayor James “Jimmy” Griffin, who died from a type of dementia in 2008. This year, the race returns to an in-person event on Saturday, May 21, in Buffalo’s Delaware Park.
The date also marks Armed Forces Day, and the Chapter will recognize active and veteran military with a ceremony to start the race, performed by the Junior ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) from the Buffalo Public Schools. Participants will receive a chipped bib that will track their time on the USA Track & Field-certified route, as well as a T-shirt, awards and after-race snacks and refreshments.
