Join the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 at Kleinhans Music Hall for a special screening of the film Winter Journey based on Martin Goldsmith’s book, The Inextinguishable Symphony: A True Story of Music and Love in Nazi Germany. This unique event features a film screening with light refreshments, followed by a live Q&A with Martin Goldsmith and JoAnn Falletta, and a BPO performance of Nielsen’s Inextinguishable Symphony, his tribute to the power of life over war.
Hailed as “a masterpiece,” “a miracle,” “exhilarating,” and “sublime” by critics in Europe, and “haunting” and “phenomenal” by The Hollywood Insider, Winter Journey is both a highly personal meditation on fate and a fascinating exploration of a little-known aspect of the Nazi era of German history. Directed by Academy Award-nominated Danish filmmaker Anders Ostergaard, it tells the story of George Goldsmith, nee Guenther Ludwig Goldschmidt, who met his future wife, Rosemarie Gumpert, when they were both members of the Judische Kulturbund, or Jewish Cultural Association, a remarkable ensemble of Jewish musicians, actors, and dancers that was maintained as an insidious propaganda tool by the Nazi’s Minister of Culture Joseph Goebbels. In the film, George shares his recollections of his tumultuous youth in a series of conversations with his son, Martin Goldsmith, who appears throughout the film but never on camera.
Don’t miss this exciting event and the late, great Bruno Ganz (Wings of Desire, The American Friend) as Gunther Goldschmidt in his final film role.
Tickets for Winter Journey are available for just $25 general admission, or $10 for students with valid student I.D. To purchase tickets, please call the BPO Box Office at (716) 885-5000.
