Dog Ears Bookstore Literary & Art Program for seniors to focus on Italy and Burchfield

Oct 2, 2021 | Arts & Culture

Dog Ears Bookstore is offering a free literary and art program for senior citizens. Those 55 years old and above are invited to participate in the “Around The World” Literary & Art Program that explores different countries around the world and their authors, artists and culture.

On Wednesday, Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., join in an exploration of Italy! A literary instructor will introduce participants to the life and work of Umberto Eco and Dante. Various works from the authors will be read and reflected on and information about Italy and its culture and history will be discussed.

Following the literary discussion, the Burchfield Penney Art Center will be on hand to facilitate a special art session. Participants will learn about Buffalo’s most famous artist, Charles E. Burchfield, the first artist to have a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art and whose work can be found hanging in museums from Buffalo to Vatican City in Italy. Participants will see how Burchfield created works stirred by the power and beauty of the woodland areas of Western New York and will create their painting inspired by his work.

The program is limited to 15 participants and is completely free for senior citizens. All class materials are provided. In addition, a book of the highlighted authors work will be raffled off among those in attendance.

The program will be held at Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo (near Mercy Hospital). All COVID protocols must be followed including social distancing and mask wearing for those who are not vaccinated. The café will be open for food and beverage purchases.

Pre-registration is required for each session and can be made by calling the bookstore at (716) 823-2665.

“Around The World” Literary & Art Program is a monthly series that features a different country and its authors and artists each month and is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by Arts Services Inc.
