Dog Ears Bookstore to offer free literary & art program for senior citizens

Aug 24, 2021 | Arts & Culture

Dog Ears Bookstore will be offering a free literary and art program for senior citizens. Those 55 years and older are invited to participate in the Around The World Literary & Art Program that will explore different countries around the world and their authors, artists and culture.

On Wednesday, Sept. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m., join in an exploration of Japan! A literary instructor will introduce participants to the life and work of Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Basho. Various works from the authors will be read and reflected upon. Following the literary discussion, a local glass artist will guide participants in making their own glass sushi dish.

On Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., participants will explore France! The literary portion of the program will feature works by Jules Verne and Victor Hugo. A local artist will also guide participants in making a piece of art inspired by Henri Matisse. Participants will learn Matisse’s process of “drawing with scissors” and will create their own playful cutout collage.

The program is limited to 15 participants and is completely free for senior citizens. All class materials will be provided. In addition, a book of the highlighted authors work will be raffled off among those in attendance.

The program will be held at Dog Ears Bookstore, which is located at 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo (near Mercy Hospital). All COVID protocols must be followed including social distancing and mask wearing for those who are not vaccinated. The café will be open for food and beverage purchases.

Pre-registration is required for each session and can be made by calling the bookstore at (716) 823-2665.

The Around The World Literary & Art Program features a different country and its authors and artists each month. More information on fall sessions will be forthcoming.

Around The World is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the governor’s office and the New York State Legislature, and is administered by Arts Services Inc.
