South Buffalo native Rosemary Voltmann, author of Just Look Up, an illustrated book explaining the passing of someone to a child, will visit Dog Ears Bookstore & Café for a book-signing event from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. Dog Ears is located at 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo.
“This is my first book and it was written as a way of explaining the passing of my son, Zach Voltmann, to one of his friend’s children,” said the author, who now resides in the Tampa area. “It took many forms before becoming a children’s book. (Illustrator) Kat Silver used the story and some of Zach’s actual photographs as inspiration to paint images that are beautiful and haunting. While writing the book, it also became a way of coping with the unthinkable. There is not a word in the English language to describe a parent that has lost a child. We have widows, widowers, orphans … but there is nothing to describe this role. I believe this book leaves the reader with a sense of hope, in believing that our loved ones are not far away; they are forever with us if we take the time to just look up.”
Silver graduated with a degree in art from Nazareth College in Rochester in 2001 and earned a master’s degree in art therapy from Drexel University in 2006. This is the first children’s book that she has illustrated. Nature is a major source of her inspiration.
