Autumn brings new weather, new routines and hopefully some new positive habits.
“Creating lasting changes in your life takes serious commitment and purpose,” declares Hina Khan, a psychotherapist and behavioral expert. “These changes will not come easily and are sure to be exciting and challenging. But your efforts will help bring you closer to your goal of leading a healthy lifestyle, and will be well worth it in the end.”
Turn over a new leaf this fall with four areas to focus on for better health and habits:
1. Proper sleep. Adults should sleep at least seven hours per night and no more than nine. Make sure all electronics are turned off at least an hour before bed and create a calm environment for relaxing. If you have trouble falling asleep, try reading before bed and enjoying a cup of herbal tea.
2. Exercise. Having someone to work out with can help you stay dedicated to your new fitness routine. A walking or running buddy helps ensure you don’t miss a day.
3. Avoid smoking. Smoking is not only bad for your health, it also stops you from maintaining other healthy habits like exercising and sleeping properly. While smoking is addictive, there are resources to help, including scientifically proven smoking cessation products like Nicorette QuickMist and Nicorette Gum.
4. Healthy eating. A proper diet is key to any routine. Meal prep can ease the stresses of the week and ensure you’re eating a well-balanced meal every day. You can find tons of nutritious recipe ideas online.
Remember that it can take up to two months to form a new habit. Speak to your doctor or physical therapist for more information on how to establish the best healthy routine for you.
