South District Councilman Chris Scanlon is pleased to be sponsoring a monthly family and book-themed gathering at Dog Ears Bookstore & Café. Family Literacy Night is a program designed to bring family members together to read books, do crafts and enjoy a healthy snack once a month in 2016. The event will run the third Monday of each month beginning at 6:30 p.m. and will run for 60 to 90 minutes.
Families can gather at the bookstore and enjoy stories, crafts, music, snacks and more. Scanlon, who has made education one of his top priorities, thinks the fit is perfect for the people of South Buffalo. “Family and literacy are the cornerstone of this neighborhood and we have always taken pride in educating our children and watching them grow into contributing and responsible young people.”
Dog Ears Bookstore has many programs for people of all ages, but this one in particular directly fits the mission of the organization. Bonding is key to creating close-knit families and statistics show that when families make reading, writing and books part of their everyday lives, the family unit stays intact and the children go on to successful school and work experiences. The program will also concentrate on the many literacies that young people need and will experience throughout their lives.
“Literacy is not just about reading and writing,” said Dog Ears Director Tom McDonnell. “It is about understanding the world around you and tapping into all the skills that we have and experience on a daily basis. Through books and together as families we will be exploring the way we use different literacies to survive in an ever-changing and fast-paced world.”
The first Family Literacy Night will take place at Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road, Buffalo, the evening of Jan. 18.
