It was Aug. 15, 2006 when Joseph Lyons opened Joe’s Deli at 1322 Hertel Ave. (at Colvin Boulevard) in his hometown of Buffalo. If the address sounds familiar, it’s because that location was, for many decades, home to Mastman’s Delicatessen. Lyons, who wanted to be on the ground floor of Hertel Avenue’s rejuvenation, completely renovated, updated and redecorated the setting, while maintaining many of the deli delights with which Buffalonians had become enamored.
To mark the occasion of 10 successful years and to thank its customers for their loyalty, Joe’s Deli will offer any sandwich off the traditional menu for just $2.06 on Monday, Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hertel Avenue location and Joe’s Deli’s second location, which Lyons opened at 534 Elmwood Ave. in 2013.
“I have worked in restaurants all over the United States,” says Lyons, “but my heart has always been in Buffalo. My family is here and the people are just so genuine. I’m so grateful for the success I have had, thanks to loyal customers, that I just wanted to give something back.”
Lyons, who attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y., previously worked at the historic Park Lane restaurant and the Statler Towers before opening Joe’s Deli.
The only stipulation Lyons is placing on the $2.06 sandwich deal is that customers must place their orders in person at either restaurant so, as Lyons puts it, “they can wish us ‘Happy Anniversary!’ while they’re there!”
The Joe’s Deli menu features the traditional deli favorites, including some sandwiches that have been on the menu for the full 10 years, as well as unique, eclectic choices for the more adventurous appetite.
