The Mount Mercy Academy Varsity Soccer team picked up where it left off last season, opening with two wins.

The Mount Mercy Academy Varsity Soccer team picked up where it left off last season, opening with two wins in non-league action. The team defeated both Springville and Frederick Law Olmstead in tune-up action before opening its defense of the Monsignor Martin League B Division Championship.

The team, coached by Maddie Higgins, also returns senior Rosie Bandura (West Seneca), and two-time B Division Player of the Year and Second Team All-Catholic selection, junior Ellie Hart (Buffalo).

The Magic won a tight contest in its opener, shutting out Springville 1-0. Senior goalie Amelia Lalley (Buffalo) had the shutout, as well as the assist on the team’s lone goal, which was scored by Bandura.

Several players got into the score column against Olmstead. Bandura found the net five times and added two assists. Freshman Molly Govern (Snyder) and sophomore Brenna Grigsby (Buffalo) netted their first career goals, with Govern scoring twice. Senior Maura Higgins (Buffalo) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Olivia Gorczyca (Lakeview) and junior Kendall Markiewicz (Buffalo) each had an assist. Freshman Leigha Przbyszewski (Buffalo) had the shutout in goal.

The Mount Mercy Academy Volleyball teams opened their season against Mount Saint Mary. The teams fought hard, but ended up on the short end of the score sheet.

The Mount Mercy Academy Golf team struggled in its opening two matches, dropping contests to Sacred Heart Academy and Nardin Academy. Senior First Team All-Catholic Addison Barth (Hamburg) paced the team in both matches, finishing with a 52 against Sacred Heart and notching a 47 against Nardin. Sophomore Kaelen Zarzecki (West Seneca) had a 54 against Sacred Heart. Freshmen Emma Miller (Lackawanna) and Maddie Callahan (Hamburg) opened their golf careers at Mount Mercy.
