Joan Meaney Ulsher, Mount Mercy Academy Class of 1986, recently spoke to the school’s juniors and seniors about her new book, Misplaced Childhood, and her work in the area of social work. Ulster also recalled how Mount Mercy Academy impacted her life.
Meaney Ulsher, a retired U.S. Army Major, was a Platoon and Executive Officer, Adjutant and most notably Chief of the 6th Infantry Division Support Command Medical Operations Center at Fort Richardson, Alaska. In addition, she was handpicked as the first Military Medical Coding Consultant to the Army Surgeon General, a role she spearheaded for the Department of Defense (DOD).
She spoke about her book, a memoir of her life.
Junior Isabelle Reaska (West Seneca) was moved by the talk. “Ms. Ulsher’s presentation was inspiring; her story, even more so. As she told us about her life experiences and how she’d illustrated them in her book, I was compelled and interested, despite the fact that I could not personally relate,” Reaska commented.” Her passion for helping children was apparent in her every word, and understanding where she came from made her vocation all the more admirable.“
