Author and South Buffalo native Joan Meaney Ulsher will return to her hometown this month for a book-signing event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22, at Dog Ears Bookstore, 688 Abbott Road.
While attending Mount Mercy Academy, Joan enlisted in the U.S. Army. She is currently a San Antonio-based writer, philanthropist, retired U.S. Army Major and award-winning child advocate. A survivor of abuse with firsthand experience of foster care in Erie County, Joan serves children and teens as a court-appointed special advocate in the foster care system in Bexar County, Texas. Net profits from the sales of her book, Misplaced Childhood, directly benefit Child Advocates San Antonio, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
There are over 391,000 children in foster care in America today, and Misplaced Childhood: A True Story of Resiliency and Child Advocacy by Court Appointed Special Advocate Joan Ulsher, is a compelling true story of the author’s endured child abuse, foster care experience and her journey into CASA advocacy. Focused on themes of resiliency, hope, redemption, forgiveness and finding purpose in serving children in the foster care system as a volunteer child advocate, Misplaced Childhood is a call to action where the author introduces the CASA/GAL model uniquely and personally while urging readers to consider serving children in foster care in their local communities.
Ulsher is also an alumna of St. Ambrose Elementary School in Buffalo, the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Oswego and the University of Pittsburgh Health & Rehabilitation Sciences Department.
