Mount Mercy Academy’s students and staff continued to be busy serving the community during the month of January. One of the missions of Mount Mercy Academy is compassionate service. This mission was well met in January as the school assisted at places such as Harvest House and Our Lady of Charity Parish. Once again, Campus Minister and senior theology teacher Mary Colby is asking members of the senior class to plan and coordinate a service project. Projects continued, as six seniors initiated service projects and the school also had other service activities.
Senior Bridget Burke (Buffalo) coordinated a service event at the Harvest House Baby Ministry. Bridget and crew worked to sort and organize children’s clothes. Senior Kathleen Ball (Buffalo) and her team of seniors also spent an afternoon helping out at Harvest House. The seniors worked to organize and sort clothes for the baby ministry. Harvest House provides valuable resources for women in our community.
The school recognized the 90th birthday of Sister Irma Kiss with a card from the student body.
Senior Melanie Bebak (Cheektowaga) organized a group of volunteers to help out at the Julia Boyer Reinstein Public Library. The students helped set up, clean up and run an event for the public at the library.
Erin Jackson, a senior from Buffalo, provided a crew of volunteers for a Friday night dinner at Our Lady of Charity. The group worked to serve dinner for 75. The community dinners depend on the efforts of volunteers to prepare and serve dinner for the hungry in the community. The Our Lady of Charity Friday night dinners provides a hot meal for people in need.
Senior Brianna Starzynski (Buffalo) gathered volunteers to assist with the Cheektowaga Adapted Recreation Program Winter Ball and Ice Cream Social. The group included Mercy freshmen and seniors who had fun serving ice cream and dancing with the participants.
Senior Megan Jobson of Orchard Park gathered a group of volunteers to help out at For Every Little Handprint, an organization founded by Mount Mercy senior Olivia Larson. Jobson and her volunteers helped sort and catalog hundreds of books that had been donated. They prepared the books for distribution to children.
Campus Minister Mary Colby continues to volunteer at Adult Learn to Swim lessons. She urges the student body to find a way to use their passions to help others.
The Mount Mercy community continues to follow Catherine McAuley’s vision of compassionate service and affirming the dignity and uniqueness of individuals.
