Mount Mercy Academy’s Speech and Debate team recently continued its impressive performances at the City Honors School Tournament. Despite its small size as a private school, the team placed third overall, finishing behind two larger public schools.
Senior Vayana Stoyanova (Gowanda) placed second in Oral Interpretation of Literature and third in Dramatic Interpretation of Literature. Classmate Linda Li (China) was fourth in Oral Interpretation of Literature.
Seniors Katie Regan (East Aurora) and Madisyn Hoffman (Lackawanna) placed second in Dramatic Duo Interpretation. Regan also placed fourth in Extemporary Speaking.
Not only did the seniors play an important part in the team’s outstanding showing, there were also outstanding performances from the younger team members. Freshman Veronica Friol (West Seneca) placed third in Declamation. Sophomore Nola Marrero finished first in Junior Varsity Extemporary Speaking.
Also competing were sophomores Samantha Acara (West Seneca) and Tamara Olumon-Fuentes (Buffalo).
The Speech and Debate team will now switch to remote competitions during the winter months, which expands the number of teams Mount Mercy can compete against.
