Academy Sports, a spacious multi-sport facility suited for all turf sports and activities, opened it’s doors this past weekend in the McKinley Mall adjacent to the food court. The business will be owned and operated by well-known Western New York baseball coach Justin Santonocito.
In addition to hosting practices, training sessions and a wide variety of activities, the turf-lined facility will also feature batting cages and a HitTrax hitting simulator. Hours are 2 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Santonocito, president of Academy Stars Baseball, one of New York’s most highly regarded travel baseball organizations, played college baseball at Mercyhurst College and professional baseball in the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds organizations. He also served as an associate scout with the Philadelphia Phillies and Minnesota Twins for a total of 10 years.
“While I have previously operated facilities that catered exclusively to baseball and softball players, this new location will provide a much-needed, well-rounded sports experience in the Southtowns for athletes of all levels,” Santonocito said. “I look forward to working with athletes who want to take their game to the next level by taking advantage of an indoor facility that will provide year-round training opportunities.”
