It is tradition at Mount Mercy Academy to recognize students who show the most improvement in their academics from one grading quarter to the next. Recently, the Mount Mercy Guidance Department presented The Mother Frances Warde Award to the student in each grade whose average improved the most from first quarter to second quarter. Honored were freshman Zuri Taylor-Houston, sophomore Ruby Griffin, junior Serenity Raynor, and senior Margaret Melligan, all of Buffalo.
The Mount Mercy Academy Mock Trial team won its opening round against Sacred Heart Academy. The Mount Mercy team acted as the prosecution and was composed of all seniors. Serving as lawyers were Andra’nique Hudson (Buffalo), Addison Barth (Hamburg) and Katie Regan (East Aurora). Caroline Tucker (Hamburg), Linda Li (China) and Charli Debose (Buffalo) were the witnesses. The team returns to court on March 2 to compete against Williamsville North.
Senior Vayana Stoyanova (Gowanda) was recently named as a semifinalist for the National Honor Society Scholarship. Stoyanova was selected from over 10,000 senior National Honor Society members as one of 575 National Semifinalists. She has already earned a $3,200 scholarship and is still eligible to be one of the 24 National Finalists, from which an overall winner will be named.
Since 1946, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) has awarded more than $23 million in scholarships to outstanding NHS seniors. This year, they are awarding $2 million in scholarships to 575 students. Each year, scholarship recipients are selected based on their demonstration of the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
