The success of the Mount Mercy Academy Mock Trial team continued as the team defeated Williamsville North, the team’s second straight victory. The team served as the defense in this trial. Representing Mount Mercy were sophomores Emma Godsoe (Buffalo), Nola Marrero (Buffalo) and Lauren Szpylman (Orchard Park) who all served as lawyers, while sophomores Brigid McQueary (Buffalo) and Maya Goodman (West Seneca) and freshman Veronica Friol (West Seneca) played the role of witnesses. The team will face Frontier on March 23, in the role of the prosecution.
Mount Mercy celebrated International Language Week with several events last week. Each morning the prayer was read in a foreign language. The students heard Bulgarian, Mandarin, Arabic and Spanish. During lunches, the students played Kahoot with foreign cultural trivia. Thursday evening the International Language Department sponsored an international dinner. The week ended with International Language Cultural Expression Day where students were encouraged to dress and express themselves in clothing that represented their culture and ethnicity. Students also had an ice cream social and learned more about the mission trip that members of the Mount Mercy Mission Academy will take to Argentina in April.
April Baskin, chairwoman of the Erie County Legislature, recently spoke to members of Mount Mercy Academy’s Women in Social Sciences Academy. Baskin spoke to students about civic responsibility and the structure of state and local governments. She highlighted the importance of all the different roles of government and enlightened students about how she entered politics and spoke about pursuing a seat in the State Senate in November.
Sophomore Nola Marrero (Buffalo) found the talk insightful. “Mrs. Baskin gave us insight into the government from a person in the government. Ultimately, she inspired us to think about different ways in which we can serve people through a government job,” Marrero said.
Two members of the Mount Mercy Academy Varsity Basketball team were honored at the end of the season. Senior Meghan Balen (Cheektowaga) and junior Alexis Dintino (Hamburg) were both named First Team All-Catholics for the Monsignor Martin B Division.
