North Tonawanda Inter-Church Food Pantry offers assistance during pandemic and year-round

May 6, 2020 | In the News

Since 1981, the North Tonawanda Inter-Church Food Pantry has been there for residents of North Tonawanda, Wheatfield, Bergholtz, Pendleton and the City of Tonawanda who have needed a helping hand during difficult times. While the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is likely to intensify that need, the pantry’s staff and volunteers are always ready to serve.

On average, 150 to 200 families receive assistance from the busy pantry on a monthly basis, according to co-coordinator Bonnie Shaffer. Food items in greatest need year-round include pancake mixes and syrup, dried grains and pasta, hot and cold dry breakfast cereals, canned pasta, peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and sauce, instant pudding and Jell-O mixes, frozen foods, boxed meals, fresh produce, canned and dry soups, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, potatoes and rice, personal care products, and canned fruits, juices and vegetables.

An official agency of the United Way of Greater Niagara, the food pantry is able to continuously operate thanks to the loyal support of approximately 40 sponsoring churches. Support also comes from individuals, schools, businesses and organizations who assist with food drives and financial donations.

The pantry never refuses anyone the first time. However, if they return, they are required to fill out an application and present proper identification including photo ID and proof of residence, income and expenses to meet government income guidelines, according to Shaffer. Once the paperwork has been completed, clients then receive food according to the size of their household. Those living outside the service area are referred to a pantry closer to their home.

One reason the food pantry has been able to operate for nearly 40 years is the dedication of many volunteers. Health issues related to the pandemic are making it difficult to add new volunteers at this time, but individuals interested in volunteering in the future can contact the food pantry and ask to be placed on a list.

Located in the Twin Cities Community Outreach Building at 100 Ridge St. in North Tonawanda, the food pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for those needing assistance. For more information about their services or to make a food or monetary donation, please call 692-8552 or email nt**********@ve*****.net. Other churches interested in supporting the food pantry should reach out directly to Bonnie Shaffer via the contact information provided.
