The second annual Leukemia Awareness Night will take place Wednesday, Jan. 20 in the gymnasium at West Seneca East Senior High School (please enter through the doors in the back parking lot).
The event is sponsored by the basketball program and held in memory of former volunteer varsity basketball coach Dan “Papa” Lutman Sr. Last year, when Coach “Papa” Lutman was diagnosed during the basketball season, the players wanted to do something to help support him in his battle with the disease. DJ Schiersing (a player last year and now a graduate) and his friend Samantha Smith (current senior) became the force behind the first Leukemia Awareness Night. It was a great success, raising over $3,000. Unfortunately, Coach “Papa” Lutman passed away in June from complications of the disease.
The school’s current basketball teams, along with their coaches, want to continue the event in his memory and honor those who have won their battle against leukemia. Doors will open on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. The JV basketball game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity game at about 7:30 p.m. There will also be a basket raffle, baked goods sale, and brochures and posters to raise awareness for leukemia.
There is a suggested $2 donation at the door. Basket raffle tickets will be sold separately.
