Bishop Timon – St. Jude High School will host its’ annual Jim Hillery ’51 Green & Gold Golf Tournament on Monday, July 23. The tournament has moved to a new location at Orchard Park Country Club.
The Green & Gold Golf Tournament offers a day of lunch, golf, cocktails and dinner while providing tuition assistance to students who would otherwise be unable to attend Timon.
Honorary chairs of this event, the Purcell family are no strangers to life’s challenges and challenging golf courses. All five of the Purcell brothers attended Bishop Timon High School and four of the five were members of the golf team.
Joe, a member of the class of 1959, received All-Catholic recognition two years in a row and was later inducted into the Timon Athletic Hall of Fame for his golf mastery. Paul, ’60, also played on the Timon golf team while achieving Academic First Honors each year. Peter, ’72, achieved Academic First Honors while playing on the golf team for three of his four years as a student. Tom, ’65, also played golf for Timon, while Pat, ’61, focused on photography for Timon publications and went on to earn his bachelor and master’s degrees in Art Education.
While the Purcell brothers are pretty golf savvy, their golf prowess only reflects a small part of their worthy achievements. Each of the Purcell brothers continued to be academic achievers, while also becoming leaders in finance, dentistry, education and industry.
Joe was committed to service and leadership in the Air National Guard while Paul served four years as an officer in the Navy, serving in Vietnam. Tom, who served in the Army for two years, became a disabled Army veteran, and Pat served with the United States Army in Alaska for two years before his employment with the East Aurora school system.
Paul volunteers with refugees seeking asylum in United States and Canada through Vive, the legal department of Jericho Road Community Health Center. Peter provides free dental services to the indigent population of Haiti each year.
The Purcell’s also remain active in their parishes which include St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Martin of Tours and Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament.
