Three upcoming events will shine the spotlight on one of Western New York’s longest-running singing groups, the Red Blazer Men’s Chorus. Formed as the Amherst Male Glee Club 75 years ago, the group currently boasts 40 active singing members ranging in age from 19 to 90, including some who have been with the group for more than 60 years!
At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, the Red Blazer Men’s Chorus will perform at the Summer in the Park Concert in Bassett Park, 359 Klein Road, Williamsville, followed by a recruiting picnic from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in Island Park, 5577 Main St., Williamsville. And on Tuesday, Aug. 29, the group will close out a busy month with a 7 p.m. performance as part of the Town of Tonawanda Summer Concert Series on the grounds of the Aquatic & Fitness Center located at 1 Pool Plaza. All three events are free and open to the public and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for their comfort.
Amazingly, during its 75-year existence, the group has been under the musical direction of just two men. Walter Reitz was at the helm from 1948 to 2006, succeeded by current director Brett Ransom.
In addition to summer performances in local parks, the Red Blazer’s can often be found performing in local senior living facilities and senior centers, as well as other regional events. They have performed the National Anthem at numerous local sporting events, and offer two major variety show concerts annually, one during the Christmas season and one in the spring. They sing all genres of music including choral pieces, show tunes, gospel/spiritual, rock, jazz and more.
The Red Blazer Men’s Chorus is also currently accepting new members. There is no audition to join, just a love of music and performing. Singers must be 18 years of age or older.
In addition to new members, the Red Blazer’s are also seeking additional performance opportunities and sponsors. For more information or to schedule an appearance, please visit www.redblazermenschorus.com, email
