SPCA Serving Erie County launches “Paws” program to engage preschoolers with animal rescue

The SPCA is offering two different program options to fit families' needs.

The SPCA Serving Erie County is excited to announce the launch of its new preschool program, “PAWS,” (Preschoolers, Adventure, and Wonder) designed to provide a fun and enriching experience for animal-loving children ages two to five. Taught by the SPCA’s humane educators, the program immerses little ones in age-appropriate activities and hands-on projects, all while teaching them about animal rescue.

The program’s curriculum engages children through stories, songs, and hands-on art projects, with special visits from animal friends. Children will participate in sensory and imaginative play, as well as peer socialization, all through the lens of animal welfare.

“The PAWS program is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young children to the concepts of compassion and empathy,” says Christine Davis, Director of Community Education. “We believe that by fostering a connection with animals at an early age, we can help shape the next generation of animal advocates. This program provides a unique, hands-on way for families to engage with our mission.”

The SPCA is offering two different program options to fit families’ needs:
Caregiver and Child Class: Perfect for a low-key introduction to the shelter environment, this program is for children ages 2-4 and a caregiver who will participate alongside their child. The 60-minute sessions are held on the second Tuesday of every month from October to May, at a cost of $20 per session.
Drop-Off Class: Designed for more independent animal enthusiasts, this program is for children ages 3-5. The 2.5-hour sessions are held on the third Wednesday of every month from October to May, at a cost of $35 per session.

The October sessions have exciting themes, including “Critter Covers” for the Caregiver and Child Class and “Does This Give You a Fright?” for the Drop-Off Class.
