SPCA Serving Erie County seeks foster care volunteers

Aug 27, 2021 | In the News

The SPCA Serving Erie County is adding foster care parents, primarily feline caregivers, to its volunteer team.

Each year, thousands of felines and, occasionally, other types of animals, are admitted into the shelter and are not ready to be put up for adoption due to illness with treatment needs, young age, or injury. Shelter overpopulation also increases the need for external foster homes. Foster care is a program specifically designed to place those animals into temporary homes where they can receive the care that they need.

When a foster parent, who must be 18 years of age or older, accepts caregiving responsibilities, all food, veterinary care and treatments, and necessary equipment are supplied by the SPCA. Foster parents, along with family members and friends, are also given first priority regarding adoption of the fostered animals when the caregiving period has closed and the animals are ready to be placed for adoption.

While the majority of animals placed into foster homes are cats and kittens, along with some rabbits and dogs or puppies, the SPCA also maintains a list of foster homes for small mammals, reptiles, and exotic animals.
