Aug 11, 2024 | Events

Spectrum Health plans informative community event.

The headlines are often very grim: opioid overdose claims another life. Despite treatment and harm reduction options, death from substance overdose – specifically opioids – happens all too frequently throughout Western New York. Two weeks shy of International Overdose Awareness Day, Spectrum Health and Human Services will present a free webinar, The Opioid Crisis: Beyond the Statistics, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at noon.

Panelists will put a human face to this crisis and will discuss regional resources. Participating are:
• Emma Fabian, Associate Vice President for Harm Reduction at Evergreen Health;
• Ann Bowback, CASAC, Project Director for Medication Assisted Treatment Enhancement, Spectrum Health and Human Services;
• Christine Lane, CASAC, Program Manager, in Spectrum Health and Human Services’ Wyoming County Counseling Center, and
• Aleks Malejs, CASAC-T, CRPA, Associate Director and Director of Recovery Coaching for Save the Michaels of the World.

Brenda Alesii, vice president of the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors and a long-time broadcast journalist, will moderate the discussion.

The webinar is presented on Zoom (https://tinyurl.com/3fk3wfz7) and will also be live streamed on Spectrum Health’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/SpectrumHumanServices.

International Overdose Awareness Day is observed globally on Aug. 31 and is the world’s largest campaign to end overdose, to acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind, and to remember – without stigma – lives lost to overdose.
