The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce will team up with volunteer firefighters from Vigilant Fire Company to hold a hand-on learning event and cookout beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, July 16. The program will take place at the firehall, located at 666 Main St. in West Seneca.
The free event will be open to Chamber members only, and RSVPs are required. Plenty of free parking is available directly behind the firehall.
During their visit, participants will spend 15 minutes at three different learning stations for breakout sessions with trained volunteer firefighters.
Session A, CPR and Defibrillation: In this breakout session, participants will practice hands-only CPR skills and will learn how to use the defibrillation units commonly found in larger buildings and offices. Explanation will be given on what the defibrillation unit does and how it critically integrates into the life-saving process.
Session B, Stop the Bleed: This training session will explain and practice the application of a tourniquet, dispel myths on its use and discuss what should and should not be used as a tourniquet alternative. Bleeding control will be demonstrated with suggestions for absolute essentials for a first aid kit.
Session C, Practical Hands-on Use of a Fire Extinguisher Using a Fire Pan: This session will teach the PASS method for extinguishment of a small fire (Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the handle, Sweep the base of the fire). A handout will be provided on types of extinguishers suitable for home and office use.
When the practice sessions have been completed, participants will be treated to a light lunch on the back patio courtesy of Edward Jones Financial Advisor and West Seneca native Tyler Marriott-Wells.
