West Seneca Chamber, safety groups to offer presentation on moving the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Dec 19, 2024 | Events

Free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce, the event will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16.

The massive 1999 undertaking to relocate the historic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina will be the topic of a presentation offered by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Niagara Frontier Chapter and the Small Business Safety & Compliance Company LLC. Free, open to the public and co-sponsored by the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce, the event will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, in American Legion Post 735, 35 Legion Parkway, West Seneca.

West Seneca native and current Orchard Park resident Joseph Jakubik was instrumental in the move and will discuss his experience, having served as safety coordinator and manager of the Historic Preservation Division of ICC Commonwealth, a leader in the design, construction, demolition and maintenance of tall structures.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was moved to save it from shoreline erosion caused by the Atlantic Ocean, which had already started to encroach on its base. It is the tallest lighthouse in the U.S., standing approximately 210 feet from base to tip.

The event will open with networking from 5 to 5:30 p.m., followed by the presentation from 5:30 to 6:15 and a Q&A session from 6:15 to 6:30. Attendees will enjoy pizza courtesy of the ASSP and the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce, and a cash bar will be available.

Reservations are required for this free event and can be made by contacting the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce at (716) 674-4900 or di******@********ca.org.
