The West Seneca Senior Center’s Fitness Center has updated its weight and row equipment to commercial grade, ease-of-use, high-quality machines.
The Fitness Center has always boasted an indoor walking track with non-slip walking surface and cushioning; cardio equipment including rowers, treadmills, ellipticals, gliders, recumbent bikes and airdyne cycles; a separate aerobic area with free weights, resistance bands and exercise balls; bocce ball and shuffleboard courts; and TVs with surround sound for entertainment while you work out. Now, they also have brand new weightlifting machines for chest press, lat pulldown with seated row, leg press, leg extension with hamstring curl, and two functional trainers to work every muscle and train the entire body.
“I am proud to see the strides the West Seneca Senior Center has made to continue to be a space for older adults to have fun, find resources and stay healthy. The fitness center is one of the town’s hidden gems and now has modern fitness equipment for all members to enjoy. We know how important it is to focus on our health and this is another opportunity for seniors to do that and have fun here at the center with friends,” said West Seneca Town Supervisor Gary Dickson.
The West Seneca Fitness Center was originally built about 20 years ago. It started as just an empty basement space. At the time, the town was considering an addition, but instead decided to make use of the large empty basement and turn it into an exciting fitness center for all to enjoy over the past 20 years. The original equipment was taken from an old gym that was closing in Buffalo. The seniors are very excited about the new equipment that is comparable to standard gym equipment.
Membership to the West Seneca Senior Center, located at 4620 Seneca St., including the Fitness Center, is open to all Erie County residents ages 50-plus. Your membership provides exclusive access to the cutting-edge Fitness Center where you can work out on your own or participate in instructor-led strength, yoga, and cardio classes. Gym membership is just $10/month paid on a month-to-month basis. They also accept Silver Sneakers, Untied Health’s Renew Active, and Univera’s Silver & Fit as well as Active & Fit for younger seniors ages 55 to 64. If you participate in any of these insurance options, you pay nothing for your gym membership.
The fitness center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. during the winter months.
“Having served as the WSSC fitness instructor prior to my current role as director, I spent many years dreaming of replacing the weight machines with awesome quality equipment our members could confidently use to increase their muscle and fuel their bodies. Now that dream is a reality, and we have the exclusive club for ages 50 and up,” said Jenifer Stanek, Director of Senior Services, Town of West Seneca.
Councilman Jeffrey Piekarec, liaison to the Senior Center, suggested that the Senior Center request to make the purchase of new fitness center equipment with funds not used during Covid.
“While it was disappointing to see state and county pandemic restrictions limit the operation of our town Senior Center in 2020/2021, I am very proud to have worked with our Senior Services Director Jenifer Stanek, Finance Director Alissa Straus and my colleagues on the Town Board to transfer unused labor funds for the purpose of replacing many pieces of decades old fitness equipment in our town Senior Center. We now have new fitness equipment that will be utilized by our seniors for many years to come,” said Piekarec.
If older adults are looking for more information on the Senior Center, they can visit the town website at www.westseneca.net and find “Senior Center” under the Departments tab.
